The first step is saving energy: insulation, better windows and doors, well-adjusted heating controls and efficient lighting reduce consumption.
The second step is switching, for example to a heat pump, solar thermal, photovoltaics or district heating. The federal government and the states subsidise many of these measures. We discuss what suits your building.
Heat pumps use heat from air, ground or groundwater; the better the building is insulated, the better they work. Pellet boilers burn wood pellets. Hybrid systems combine a heat pump with a gas or oil boiler for cold days. Where a network exists, district heating is an option.
Which solution fits depends on the energy condition, the local possibilities and the budget. Get expert advice before you decide.
